Services › Building Energy Rating (BER) Assessment

A Building Energy Rating or BER is an objective scale of comparison for the energy performance of a building ranging from A to G.  A-rated homes are the most energy efficient and G the least efficient.  A BER is similar to the energy label on your fridge.

Energy consumption for heating, cooling, lighting and other services in buildings gives rise to nearly half of all Ireland’s energy related CO2 emissions and is increasing all the time. This represents one third of Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions associated with global warming. Housing alone accounts for over one quarter of energy related CO2 emissions.  Ireland, along with all EU Member States, has committed to reducing its CO2 emissions in order to meet the reduction targets set out in the Kyoto Protocol.

A BER certificate will be compulsory for almost all new homes by mid 2008.  If you are buying or renting a new house or apartment now, you may already be entitled to a BER – so ask the seller/landlord or their agent for it.
